DiGiTrout
The free digital twin for trout farming facility management
Developed as part of CIRCULAR RAINBOW — an Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia 2021–2027 project — DiGiTrout simulates the operation of your RAS facility, optimizes feed rations, and supports seasonal planning. Free access, registration in seconds.
Managing a trout farming facility is complex
Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) offer significant advantages over traditional flow-through systems — temperature control, water savings, higher biomass yield — but require more precise and continuous management. Determining the right feed ration, anticipating water exchanges, planning harvest at the optimal time: these are decisions that directly impact farm profitability.
DiGiTrout was designed to support these decisions with forecasts based on validated scientific models.
What is a Digital Twin?
A Digital Twin is a virtual replica of a real physical system. In the case of DiGiTrout, it is a mathematical model that simulates the behaviour of a trout farming facility — tank, biofilter, water quality, fish growth — based on the actual facility parameters entered by the user.
It is not a generic estimate: the model accounts for water temperature, feed composition, stocking density, and the structural characteristics of the system, returning forecasts specific to your facility.
What can you do with DiGiTrout?
DiGiTrout offers two simulation modes, for three facility types (flow-through, partial recirculation, RAS):
Weekly management — 7-day forecasts of average weight, biomass, daily feed ration, oxygen demand, and water quality. Useful for day-to-day operational decisions.
Semester planning — 6-month scenarios to schedule harvest, feed and consumable purchases, and assess the cost-effectiveness of converting to RAS systems compared to traditional facilities.
Results are displayed in tables and charts exportable in .csv format.
